Regarding the tendon thing, I realized after I wrote that that I have a trick knuckle (from a childhood incident) whose tendon I can snap back and forth at will. The noise is more of a dull thud rather than the pop crackle snap crackle pop pop - hey, Jim's here! - that I get when I curl my toes at the right time. The crackling I get usually occurs after I've been idle a while, especially at night. I've often wondered if it's a symptom of all the cycling.
