    Google Gmail

By jim On 30 September 2004 · 45 Comments · In Cool Geek Tricks

Thanks to Bibi, I’ve had a google gmail account for several months now. I know it’s still technically beta, but a lot of people are using it as a primary mail system.

It’s generally been reliable. However, since they last increased the number of invites two weeks ago, I’ve been getting a lot of timeouts:

Oops… the system was unable to perform your operation. Please try again in a few seconds.

This reminds me of the experience I’ve had with Orkut, the social networking portal affiliated with google. Orkut’s got some great people and interesting discussion groups on it, but it’s become soo…. unbearably… slow… that I’ve stopped used it. (Edit: I deleted my Orkut account in 2006 because of all the spamming; should have done it earlier. )
    But back to gmail…

    gmail screen

The sponsored links on the side are benign, and appear usually after prolonged exchanges or long enough missives. As you can see in the picture, they’re identical to the top right box on my blog. For example, my cream cheese brownies generated a lot of traffic for Fat Witch. An email thread on the same topic had ads pointing to other vendors’products. (I’m still partial to the Fat Witch name, though.)

I love Google’s conversation threading model and wish this would be incorporated into Outlook. The index screen shows the thread name (subject of email), number of messages, and a partial list of recipients. When you click on a message, everything is compacted except the new parts of a thread, though you can click to open previous parts fairly easily. Best of all, when composing a response, you can do this without popping up another window to view the original contents.

The label and filtering options are okay, though I have to admit I’m still thinking of labels as “folders,” where a message goes into one and only one label. Gmail lets you apply as many labels as you want. I have several filters set up for mailing lists to dump things into “labels” (treating them like files) for me to read later. Some of them are very busy and I want to do a “catch up.” Unfortunately, you can only catch up 50 at a time. (Edit: now updated to allow 100 or all.)

Search options are much better than Outlook (which is not saying much), but not nearly as good as the NEO application that one can purchase to run on top of Outlook. It’s textual-based search, with simple stuff like search From, To, Subject, labels, words it has, words it doesn’t have, attachments, and within a range of a date. If a search produces too large a set of results, you can’t refine it, and have to start over.

Two huge pluses of gmail over hotmail and yahoo are the space (2+Gb is a lot of messages Edit: it’s now 2Gb+, Yahoo has matched. Probably hotmail too. This blog entry is over 2 1/2 years old.) and the lack of tagging (appending the “Do you Yahoo? I do, and I’m too lazy to change my .signature!”) outbound email with advertisements, a practice I find obnoxious. Spam filtering seems to be on par with the others.

I’ve had similar problem with gmail. I’ve been getting the “oops…” message for a few days now. I created another gmail account, and it works just fine, so it’s has nothing to do with my computer. I also tried loggin in from other computers, with no luck.

Did anyone have this problem, and it magically went away?

Heh, this blog comes up top if you Google for the “Oops…” GMail error :)

My contribution is… be patient! Leave it a while (um, like it says) and it fixes itself. Looks like it may be network related, so I don’t see how signing up for another account is going to help.

There are no special drivers required to use Google Gmail, though you should be using a relatively modern browser like Firefox or Safari.

If you’re still having problems, you might try clearing out your browser’s cache and cookies, then exit and restart the browser. And it should be obvious, but make sure you’re not blocking cookies or javascript for them.

The solution for the oops… problem is to go to your gmail settings and turn off snippets. This seems to get rid of the problem. Hope that helps.

      yah,
i’ve been getting the oops message all day today. i can log into gmail, see new and old message headers, but i cant open them.
i tried turning my firewall off (although it worked in the past just the way it is) and turning off snippets, and messing with the gmail settings, but the oops message just wont go away.
i guess i’ll keep on trying different stuff as this doesnt seem to be that common of a problem (to be blocked 100% of the time from reading mail for hours)

First: wow a blog site I don’t actually hate

Secondly: turning off snippets doesn’t fix at all ( I turned off snippets the first day I had gmail and have suffered this oops farce many a time). I hate this, I have tried all night to send a 7 meg attachment… they are waiting on the other end… when was the last time you ever had to blame email for anything?

      Resorted to my old account.

Will phase out my gmail account. After 5 months I think I have given it enough leway for its beta status.

      Google ate my homework.

      28 March 2005 at 12:50

      > First

      Thanks.

      > Secondly

I’ve sent sub-5 meg attachments, though not always without trouble. I think the “oops” message literally means their server’s buckling under pressure.

Gmail setup is created with a bunch of loosers. The service fails and are WERRY unstable.

Made with PHP & MySQL !

Time for Google to think JAVA and ORACLE now.

      One million users online
      One million pageviews a second
      One million inserts a second

      - Only ORACLE’s strenght can handle that.

Yes that “careless attitude” of google is annoying.. They should have a proper site that displays gmail stats, what servers are down, what countries are affected etc..

I think gmail wont last very long if this continues.. I am already thinking of how to export my 300 mb of email to some other provider…

I’m having this really odd problem. I am unable to connect to any of the messengers and also to google services like orkut and gmail. When i try to load the page to sign in the page just keeps on loading and finally shows “cannot find server” page. Moreover i’m also unable to connect to my ftp host thru my ftp program CoreFTP. But i can open other webpages like before. Is this a problem of my firewall or some other problem of my computer. Or is it some problem of my internet provider? And oh though i cant open orkut login page i am able to open its help page where i tried to find a solution but no results. Plz help ASAP
