100 things*

* May not actually add up to 100 because of tax, title, license, undercoating and/or statistical sampling errors.
** Please feel free to suggest additions. If you email me, please put "100 Things" as the subject line.
General Characteristics
  • I love to cook more than I like to eat.
  • Most of my friends are women.
  • I like to take pictures. (Grin grin, snap snap, wink wink.)
Geekish Traits
  • I work at a small, scientific visualization company.
  • I am a titanium card member at my local library.
  • I have used the "vi" editor for nearly half of my adult life, including now as I edit this file. Regular expressions are my friends.
  • I successfully completed NaNoWriMo 2004 on November 25. I am going to attempt NaNoWriMo again in 2006 with mutual success encouraged by Kiri.
Quirks
  • I'm very good at picking things up with my feet.
  • I don't wear jewelry or a watch, nor do I have any piercings or tattoos.
  • Spiders don't bother me since they mostly stay out of my way. (I can't stand the ginormous flying cockroaches, though.)
  • I like to drive small cars, ride a funky bike and fly airplanes. (I sold the plane because airplane ownership is too expensive.)
  • I prefer cool weather. 58°F and partly sunny is ideal.
  • I am tactile seeking, which may explain why I enjoy biking in wet weather.
Sports
  • I am terrible at all team sports. All of them.... but I once got Jeff Bezos out in dodgeball.
  • The farthest I've biked in one day was 139.8 miles. It took me 12 hours, 25 minutes. Afterwards, I slept (soundly) on a gymnasium floor.
Infotainment
  • Books: (Fiction) 1984, the first fifty pages of Jennifer Government, Illusions, Syrup, 2001: A Space Odyssey (Non-Fiction) Fannie Farmer Cookbook, The Best Recipe, The Art of Demotivation (more entertaining after earning an MBA), Undaunted Courage, Toxic Sludge is Good For You! and Miles from Nowhere.
  • TV Doctor Who (the new series), The 4400, The Colbert Report, Mythbusters, The Daily Show, House and The Weather Channel.
  • Movies - Fight Club, Dances With Wolves, The Matrix. I liked the short-lived series Firefly, so there's a gratuitous plug for Serenity, Shawshank Redemption
  • Music - I have very eclectic tastes. In a given evening, I may listen to selections from Neil Diamond, AC/DC, Leo Kottke, Led Zeppelin, REM, Dervish, CSNY (with/without N and Y), Cat Stevens and Sheryl Crow. Generally, I'm drawn to acoustical performances like KMTT's Mountain Music Lounge. With rare exceptions, I am uninterested in Country or Rap.
  • Food - Thai, Tex-Mex, Japanese, Vegetarian, noodly dishes.
  • Drinks - Milk, Fresca, iced tea. (I am a teetotaler
Politics and Religion
  • This space left blank. Intentionally.
College
  • I went to a small, private university you've probably never heard of.
  • I have masters degrees in Electrical Engineering and Business. My undergraduate degree is in computer science and mathematical sciences. My next degree will be something completely different.

Hi Jim, I'm Randy Martin's YOUNGER brother, that also happens to be the Event Director of the Ride Around Clark County down in Vancouver, WA. One small correction on your description of the RACC; the century is actually now at 100 miles instead of 103. (minor route change for safety's sake) I also survived RSVP 2004, riding with my brother and my wife. We were with Randy when he was giving you the encouragement you mentioned in your ride description. Hopefully the rain will give us a break this year!
