Mine has to be literally less than an inch, otherwise it times out and gets choppy. The other thing to check is the little red dot is aligned close (e.g., you don't shake it or anything.) I've got a Dell Inspiron 8600 and this worked. Only thing to notice is that when I first got my Laptop the IR interface was not installed.
